16-04-2008 l Salah Edin Wins Lawsuit Against Wilders

Image

Salah Edin has won the lawsuit against Dutch MP Geert Wilders. Salah Edin sued Mr. Wilders for copyright infringement and portrait right infringement after the Dutch MP had misused Salah's CD Cover picture in his controversial movie 'Fitna' instead of the picture of convicted murderer Mohamed B.

Salah Edin had sued for a maximum € 25000 ($36.000), but was only awarded € 3000 ($5600) after the judge argued some of the blame was on Salah himself for mimicking the mugshot of Mohamed B.

Salah Edin, through his lawyers Margriet Koedooder and Nadine van Bodegraven has made it clear he was happy with the verdict, although he strongly disgreed with the judge putting a partial blame on him.

Salah Edin has also made it clear in his interview with Radio presenter Giel Beelen on station 3FM, that he will donate the money to a good cause in the occupied territories of Palestine.

07-04-2008 l Salah Edin Exclusive Statement Re: Lawsuit Mr.Wilders & Fitna

Image

To all my fans and those interested,

Over the last weeks I have read a good amount of negative responses to my decision to take Mr. Wilders to court for unlawfully using my picture in his movie 'Fitna'. In the interest of understanding my decision to sue Mr. Wilders I would like to mention the following to all those who have expressed anger at me for making this decision.

When I made this picture, I made it for the Dutch market. The Dutch market is a small consumption market in which this picture is well known and where we have good control over the media to explain our artistic intentions. My artistic intention with this picture was to depict the fact that, as I experienced, the average Dutch citizen thinks all Moroccans with a beard and shaved head expose a thread of terrorism, extremism and danger. In some way, Mr.Wilders' mistake has, to a certain extend, proved this to be true. However, I did not take the picture to look like convicted murderer Mohamed Bouyeri. To claim I did and say it is my own fault Mr.Wilders confused me with Mohamed Bouyeri is a big misconception.

I did nothing to look like Mohamed B. I put on a white shirt, didn't shave my beard for two days and took the picture infront of my kitchendoor. You can say I look like him, as I could plea that Mohamed Bouyeri actually looks like me instead. Fact of the matter is, Mr. Wilders, with all the months of preparation and peer pressure from the media, should have known better to use the wrong picture. If Mr. Wilders could not get the picture of the most notorious and most famous killer in Holland correct, why should we then trust the rest of his research? This however is a personal opinion which anyone is free to share or disagree with.

In addition, I must say that I do believe Mr. Wilders has every right to show this movie. Whether I think it's an intelligent movie or a smart thing to do is another story, but in my opinion Mr. Wilders has all the right to express himself freely. In the end, he himself will bear the consequences for his decision. But with Mr. Wilders using my picture, I do have experienced defamation of my name and character.

Many will claim I shouldn't "bitch" about this mistake because of all the free publicity I received worldwide. But on the contrary, it was not the publicity I had wished for. Yes my name has popped up everywhere, from BBC to ABC News, from Azerbadjan to Iran, from Le Monde France to CNN. But since we have no control over the international press, we have no way of explaining our artistic intentions with the picture. And this has led to news bits claiming I sympathize with Mohamed B's deeds, with terrorism and extremism, that I have denounced the Holocost as none existant and that I'm known for my derogatory and discriminatory rap texts about Dutch society and women. These things are simply not true and are damaging to my name and character, but I have no way of rectifying these comments as they are so widespread, it wouldn't even matter if I tried.

I personally chose to go on a controversial marketing road with my album 'Nederlands Grootste Nachtmerrie' and I stand by every word. But I do not agree with Mohamed B's murder of Theo van Gogh. I believe he was absolutely wrong in doing what he did. Neither have I denied the Holocost, but merely questioned the source that states the number of Jewish deaths at 6 million. Maybe they were less, maybe they were more, but that's all I questioned. And I certainly do not discriminate nor have a derogatory opinion of women. All who listened to my album will know this.

But with the international release of my Arabic album 'Horr', this defamed description of my character as an artist and person, has done alot of damage to my name and intent. I have not chosen a controversial marketing plan for my Arabic album and do not plan to do so. However, with the use of my picture in 'Fitna' I will have no say in what the international media will write about me as an artist, since my controversy was not known beyond the borders of Holland. Mr. Wilders' mistake has enforced this barrier to be broken, and the news is now beyond our control and the damage is done.

It is for this reason I have sued for damages. In addition, there is no way to deny that Mr.Wilders has broken the law of copyright and portret right for which he must stand trial. Mr.Wilders himself in person has acknowledged this. He was also always very quick to file a complaint with the police or sue anyone who said something threatening or defaming about him in the media, which is fair enough. However, we then also have that same right to sue him for his illegal use of my character.

Whatever the judge will rule, I hope with this statement, my intentions are made more clear.

Salah E.

28-03-2008 l Salah Edin Wrongly Portrayed as Convicted Killer In Dutch Anti-Islam Film

PR and Media Relations: Jonathan Hay, Publicist
Ringz & Partners Entertainment - - info@rpeg-ltd.com

Image

(LOS ANGELES, CA) - When Dutch politician, Geert Wilders, released his Islamic-bashing, fifteen-minute film entitled "Fitna" to LiveLeak.com, a London-based website, it was inevitable that he expected controversy to erupt. But what Mr. Wilders could not have expected was to wake up to headlines reporting that he had made a horrible mistake, which ultimately could de-face his entire campaign.

In the movie "Fitna," Geert Wilders plays an audio sample from convicted killer Mohamed Bouyeri, who killed Dutch columnist Theo Van Gogh for his derogatory remarks about Islam. The killer was sent to prison for life after saying he would kill again if he was ever released. The piece of audio plays in the movie at about 5:45 minutes but instead of using the killer's picture, Wilders made a huge mistake by placing the wrong picture over the audio piece. The picture he used was of artist Salah Edin, the Moroccan-Dutch rapper who intentionally (and provocatively) mimicked Bouyeri's police mug shot for his critically acclaimed album "Nederlands Grootste Nachtmerrie” (Holland’s Worst Nightmare).

Image Image

This is not the first time this mistake has been made. Last year, the free Dutch newspaper DAG who released an article about the convicted killer, also used Salah Edin's “Nederlands Grootste Nachtmerrie” album cover as their picture, foolishly including the Bonus DVD sticker posted on the picture. Salah Edin's attorneys, Margriet Koedooder of law firm De Vos & Partners in Amsterdam, reached an undisclosed out-of-court financial settlement with the newspaper. The DAG also issued a public apology, and a second rectification after the first rectification was incorrect.

Image

Many of the retail stores in Holland threatened to ban the “Nederlands Grootste Nachtmerrie” CD from hitting the record shelves because they considered it to be insulting to Dutch society, who was still in public mourning over Van Gogh’s murder. Eventually this decision was overturned when Salah Edin demanded that he had a right to his artistic expression and compared the banning of his album with banning Marilyn Manson for being insulting to religious people.

Salah Edin's album "Holland's Worst Nightmare," which was fully produced by one of Dr. Dre's Aftermath in-house producers, Focus… caused another string of controversy after the media discovered that Edin's first video "Het Land Van..." ("This Country Of...") a critical song about the way Muslims are portrayed in Dutch society, was financed by a Dutch video tax fund set up by the government to financially support Dutch artists producing quality music videos.

Salah Edin's management, Ringz & Partners Entertainment Group, issued a statement in which they compared Salah's right to freedom of speech to that of Mr. Geert Wilders and Ms. Hirsi Ayaan Ali.

"If they can say what they want, I can as well, I have a Dutch passport which means I am a Dutch citizen. And if they are entitled to use my tax money for their protection, I have the right to use that tax money to express my opinion. [The] difference between us is [that] they insult and discriminate and I artistically show the other side without hurting anyone," Salah Edin said in a statement.

The album earned an all-time high six nominations in the 2007 Dutch Urban Album Awards and earned Edin the award for 'Best Album'. Salah Edin, who is also considered to be the most popular Arabic rap artist in the world, recently licensed the song "Siasa" (Politics) from his upcoming Arabic album "Horr" (Top Notch/Universal) to New Line Cinema for the hit movie "Rendition," starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep and Reese Whiterspoon, after Oscar-winning director, Gavin Hood, heard Edin's music while shooting the film in Morocco.

In the wake of this second serious misplacement of his picture, Salah Edin says in an exclusive statement through his management, "Google states news bits of me laughing about this picture placement in Mr. Wilders' movie. On the contrary, I'm not amused at all by this 'mistake,' which defames me and my artistic intentions to millions of people who will see this movie. It does, however, show the depth of his [Wilders'] research when he can't even get the picture of a world-famous, convicted murderer right. In addition, Mr. Wilders has no [legal] right to use my portrait without prior approval from myself, my management, or my record company. He must stop showing this film immediately and correct his error or face the legal consequences. He will surely hear from my lawyers very soon."

03-07-2007 l "Project Peace" Becomes "Project War"

Image

Despite the great and succesful performances by Cilvaringz, Salah Edin, Eslam Jawaad, Palestine, Arabesque and Sean Paul, the organization of the annual "Project Peace" festival in Amman, Jordan was the worst ever in the experiences of RPEG Ltd and Sean Paul's agents Mr.Laurer & Mr. John.

"Visas were not paid for, rooms were not paid for, airport transport was not organized, security was horrible, litterly everything that could've went wrong, went wrong, except the actual performance", says Cilvaringz. "The worst was the amount of lies these people spoke to save themselves, I mean it was just incredible!"

Gulf News, the biggest newspaper in the Middle East published a piece on the events that took place and received lawsuit threaths from the festival's organizers.

14-06-2007 l Newspaper 'De Dag' Makes Huge Mistake With Salah Edin

Image

Free newspaper 'De DAG' has placed the CD Cover of Salah's debut album 'Nederlands Grootste Nachtmerrie' as the headliner picture of an article about convicted killer Mohamed B.

Salah Edin, who's face looks alot like Mohamed B, shot the same mugshot picture for the cover of his debut album. However, he couldn't understand how the newspaper could make such a huge mistake.

"The CD sticker with 'Bonus DVD' written on it is actually in the picture! This cannot be a mistake, this has been done on purpose to defame me and my intent with the picture", says Salah Edin.

Salah Edin's lawyers Margriet Koedooder and Nadine Van Bodegraven of lawyer firm De Vos & Partners, Amsterdam, have reached an undisclosed out of court financial settlement with the newspaper.

Da DAG also agreed to issue a public apoligy and a second rectification after the first rectification was incorrect.

27-05-2007 l Salah Edin Releases Debut Album, Causes More Controversy, Risks Ban In Retail.

Image

Top Notch/PIAS, Salah Edin's record label has released Salah's highly anticipated debut album 'Nederlands Grootste Nachtmerrie' (Holland's Worst Nightmare). The album, which is fully produced by Dr.Dre's right hand man Focus... comes with a bonus DVD and a very controversial front cover.

Image

On the front cover, Salah Edin appears exactly like the mugshot of convicted killer Mohamed B who murdered Dutch columnist Theo van Gogh for his publically outspoken and offensive opinion on Islam.

The front cover has caused another spark of controversy after the release of Salah Edin's first video 'Het Land Van...' which had caused a slew of controversy in media, online forums and even in the Dutch goverment one month earlier.

"This is the way the average white Dutch citizen sees me, as a young Moroccan Muslim radical. That's why I chose to do this picture and use it for the front cover of my album. It is no in way supporting the deeds of Mohamed B", says Salah Edin.

01-09-06 | Salah Edin Releases Most Controversial Video In History Of Dutch Music

Image

Moroccan rapper Salah Edin, real name Abid Tounssi, has released the most controversial video in the history of the Dutch music industry. The video for his first single 'Het Land Van...' contains graphic images of how life in Holland is through the eyes of Salah Edin and other Muslims.

The video caused extra controversy when Dutch citizens found out it was subsidised by a Tax Fund specially set up for the embetterment of music videos for national product.

Many forums erupted with racist comments and the video went on to receive over 300.000 views on YouTube.

In the video, Salah Edin starts off with a shaved face in a living room of an average Dutch family symbolic to life in Holland. Eventually, Salah starts to grow a beard and his face turns darker and grimier.

Image

Political party SGP claims the video supports Islamic radicalism and has questioned the Dutch goverment for its motives to allow subsidy to be given for the video.

Salah Edin, who's facial features clearly resemble Mohamed B, the convicted killer of Dutch columnist Theo van Gogh, says the video was produced to show the hypocracy of the Dutch people.

"I am sure about their reaction and it will 100% be filled with hypocracy. The problem with Holland is complex, but most clearly to all Muslims is that Dutch citizens continue to be supportive of political figures like Theo van Gogh, Ayaan Hirshi Ali and Geert Wilders, who all publicly expressed their hatred for Islam and the prophet Mohamed in a very disrespectful way. Yet when I, a 26 year old Moroccan release a song which is critical of life in Holland the way I experience it, I'm considered a radical! Theo van Gogh claimed the prophet Mohamed was a pedophile, Ayaan Hirshi Ali said the same and called Islam barberic and Geert Wilders openly said all Moroccans in Holland should tear up the Qu'ran if they want to stay here, and this man actually has 8 seats in the government! It is those statements that the Dutch government and its voters openly allow, but it's those same statements that actually radicalize people, not my video!", says an angry Salah Edin in a statement issued last week.

20-05-05 | Horr Updates, Collabo's, Live & RPEG

Salaam Ahlikum Rahmatullah Barakatu to all our fans and visitors. Salah Edin and his management would like to thank all the people for supporting Salah in these last months of heavy recording sessions and international performances.

Salah has been busy putting the final touches to his highly anticipated album 'Horr' as well as collaborating with prominent artists from Europe. 'Horr' is currently in mixing phase and features Arap members Cilvaringz, Eslam Jawaad, singers Hicham & Rami and Palestinian singer Shadia Mansour. Production has been fully done by wonderchild Mohalim.

In addition, Salah has recently recorded his contribution to the song 'Kom Igen' for the new Outlandish LP scheduled for release later this year on BMG. The popular award winning Danish rap/soul group, who received international praise for their hits 'Aicha' and 'Guantanamo', have been long time fans of Salah Edin's music ever since they first met eachother at a radiostation in Holland.

For the female Dutch/Moroccan singer Hind Laroussie, who's debut album went gold after she won third place in the Idols television show two years ago, Salah collaborated on a song called 'In The Distance' slated to appear on her second album scheduled for release later this year as well.

Outlandish member Isam, Hind Laroussie and Freeman of French rapgroup IAM are all scheduled to appear on Salah's 'Horr Preview Mixtape' to be released in October.

But Salah's talent isn't limited to music only. After three heavy rounds of movie casting a month ago, Salah was given a prominent role to play in a new Dutch movie called 'Bling [Bolletjes Blues]' set for release in cinemas next year. As for live performances, he will once again hit the road and appear live in Le Mans, France on May 28th alongside Cilvaringz & DJ Sueside of Wu-Tang. Other shows are currently being scheduled between June 30th and July 20th for Egypt, Lebanon, Dubai, Cyprus and Syria.

The Ringz & Partners Entertainment Group, who handles Salah's management has recently launched it's own website RPEG Ltd. The company also represents The RZA of Wu-Tang Clan and Focus of Dr.Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, as well as Cilvaringz and the Arabic Hiphop group Arap.

We can happily inform you that the number one Hip Hop artist representing the twenty two Arabic states, Salah Edin is currently in the studio with his producer Mohalim mixing his debut album 'Arbi Horr' scheduled to be released late 2005.

After performing in 17 countries last year, Salah made clear that touring is indeed the best way to inneract with people who quickly become dedicated fans of his music. This year again, his brother and manager Cilvaringz of the Wu-Tang Clan has asked him again to join the Arabic movement and tour some unexplored countries and revisit other countries again.

We made it clear that salah Edin is in no way affiliated to the Wu-Tang Clan and does not wish to be. His brother and manager Cilvaringz however is, and therefore you can see Salah Edin live, alongside Cilvaringz, RZA and Raekwon in:

Lille France 24 February
Reims France 25 February
Morlaix France 26 February
Warsaw Poland 20 March

24-11-04 | Management Statement

Even though Salah has been touring alongside dominant Wu-Tang members for the past year, Ringz & Partners Entertainment Group (Salah's management team) makes it clear that Salah "is in no way affiliated with the group or the group's name. Cilvaringz, who's an artist and producer of the Wu-Tang Clan also happens to be Salah's manager and have therefore been seen performing live together as opening acts for RZA, Raekwon and the Wu-Tang Clan at their worldtours earlier this year".
